A Custodians Thanksgiving
Tuesday, 22 November 2011 04:32

At my home, we take time to reflect on the year at Thanksgiving, which is just around the corner, and typically that holiday includes the extended family.  This year I'm thinking of the Custodians, which I consider members of my extended family.  Let me take a little time to recall what's happened this year.

Besides the full-time jobs, family obligations, and the monthly gigs where we played at local clubs, weddings, and parties, we found time to record and release a CD of original music.  Back in February/March we finalized and released our 2+ year project, a CD of 12 original tunes, now available on the www.iTunes.com and www.CDBaby.com web sites, among others.   Did I mention we recorded it in my living room studio?  ;-)  You can also hear the tunes streaming on Maine Musicians Exchange Radio, tune in at www.MaineMusiciansExchange.org .  And of course you can find the CD at Bull Moose Music in Scarborough, Waterville, and Bangor, or order it online at their web site, or get one through any band member or at our gigs.  We've also sent it to local radio stations like WKIT and WCYY, so contact them and request your favorite Custodians tune!

This summer brought some tough times to the Custodians family.  We had to take time off for surgeries and family medical emergencies, accidents, sickness, and tragedy.  Not fun periods.  We had some gear die on us, but that's nothing compared to the medical stuff.   Gear can be, and was, replaced.  We had to cancel a couple gigs in emergency fashion as well, due to family issues.  I know you all understand how it is to lose a loved one, and we've been through that this summer, as well as had our loved ones and immediate band members in hospital for one reason or another.  It is no fun.

Then Big John announced his intention to get off the road and leave the band - another big blow to the band as John is one of the founding members and has shaped the band into what it is today.  To say he leaves big shoes to fill is literal and figurative!  But we decided to continue on after John left, which was final with his last gig, a private party earlier this month.  We've found a replacement bass player in Troy Richardson, who was lately engineering sound for us.  Troy is a talented young man and can sing and play guitar and keyboard, among other things.  He also brings technical talent to the band with his engineering side, and is also genuinely interested in perfecting his abilities and pleasing an audience in the process.  We are working hard now to re-form the band and put together the new group, while still being true to the Custodians sound and ideals.  With luck, we expect to be taking bookings soon for the February/March timeframe and beyond.  And yes, we're still adding new tunes even as we regroup!

All through this period we've also been replacing and upgrading gear.  After all, we're all guys with tremendous toy appetites!  Personally I've been refining my gear for my guitar/synth systems, and have acquired some more gear I intend to add soon.  We've purchased a new front of house (FoH) system - a really clean, great sounding JBL system, which should boost our sound that much more.  John has added a fine Seagull acoustic guitar to his list of instruments.  Oh, but he doesn't count any more!  ;-)  Troy brings on his gear, as well.

Well, thanks for the fellowship and thanks for the fans and thanks for the people who hire and enjoy us.  Thanks to you for reading this, and have a good, safe, memorable holiday season.  From all of us Custodians, to all of you...

Happy Holidays!

- Gordon

September News

Greetings To All

It’s been a busy summer for The Custodians of Rock ‘N Roll, we just had a show postponed, we booked new ones, we added a new sound man and one of our founding members is leaving the band. There’s much to talk about.

Have you been asking yourself, where have The Custodians been? Well, believe me we have taken no time off. While not appearing at local pubs and clubs we had an awesomely busy summer playing private parties and weddings. We’ve enjoyed wonderful moments taking part in the coming together of some fantastic young people while at the same time providing the finishing touches with our particular brand of rock and roll. Also, like the summers before, we rocked several outdoor parties. I’m sure our music was heard across a few Mid Maine lakes this summer. Also, we proudly proclaim that for the sixth summer in a row The Custodians played what must be called the notorious Burnham Party. Thanks to those who hired us for their special occasions.

Indeed it’s time for The Custodians to get back into the public eye but first we must announce that the September 10 show at Mainely Brews has been postponed. However you can catch us Saturday night October 8 at the Red Maple Inn for our first performance ever at this Guilford landmark. The new owner Paul has been working hard to update this old building and bring in the best acts from around Maine. In addition we will be playing the next Saturday night October 15 at Mainely Brews in Waterville. We’ve been playing at Mainely Brews for six years and the great food and atmosphere never lets us down. Moreover, if you arrive before our 8:00 o’clock show you will be treated by the musical talents of Mark Miller. How fantastic: Mark Miller for dinner and The Custodians of Rock ‘N Roll for dessert.

In addition to gig information we would like to announce that our sound man Mike O’Leary left the band to pursue his love for playing harmonica. We wish him the best of luck and thank him for his hard work and dedication to The Custodians of Rock ‘N Roll. However, while we hated to see Mike go, we are extremely happy to announce the addition of Troy Richardson as our new sound technician. Troy is a young and talented musician who may prove to be much more than our sound guy.

Besides the news above we are announcing that “Big” John Campbell will be leaving the band in November. I know he will always be a Custodian at heart and The Custodians of Rock ‘N Roll will forever appreciate John’s enthusiasm and wisdom. Also understand, that while replacing John is not possible, we are currently trying out bass players.

All in all The Custodians are looking forward to a bright future as we finish season seven of friendship, family and rock and roll. We also want to remind you to buy your Custodians of Rock ‘N Roll cd, available at Bull Moose Music, itunes, cdbaby.comamazon.com, many other online stores and your local Custodian.

Thanks to all who support us!

We truly appreciate you!

What a night last weekend at Mainely Brews. The dance floor stayed crowded and the drinks flowed all night. Congratulations to Luke and his staff for warm friendly service and fantastic food. To our regulars we love you and thanks to our new fans. A special rowdy thanks goes out to the extensive Burnham crowd.

M Room Extravaganza
Monday, 14 March 2011 10:42

If you were not there, you should have been. We just played to a super packed wild and crazy crowd at The M Room last Saturday night, March 5. It was a fabulous event as the dance floor was packed from the first song (an original Custodians tune) to the last song (also one of ours). The crowd was rocking and rowdy as they danced shoulder to shoulder. Thanks to all who were there! Next we play March 26 at Mainely Brews in Watererville. Come join us for another Custodians good time.
